Does acupuncture
hurt?
Acupuncture treatment done by a qualified practitioner should not be
painful. Some people may feel slight sensation or soreness during the
initial insertion of the needles and others may feel nothing. The most
common feeling is a strong sense of relaxation and well-being (many
people become so relaxed that they fall asleep during treatment).
How does acupuncture
work?
Acupuncture points are specific locations on your body where a high
density of nerves and blood vessels intersect. By needling those points
the Chinese discovered that they can have a profound calming and restorative
effect on the nervous system while improving blood flow to certain areas
of the body. Acupuncture influences your body to heal itself by triggering
these vital mechanisms.
How long does
an acupuncture treatment take?
A single treatment typically takes between 20 minutes and one hour.
At our wellness center, once the needles are put in place, patients
relax in a room for an average of 20 to 30 minutes.
How often
am I going to need to get acupuncture?
Every person is different. In order to give each person the individualized
care they deserve, Dr. Mancini needs to evaluate your condition before
making any recommendations. As their function improves, the frequency
of treatments patients need decreases so Dr. Mancini regularly evaluates
patient progress.
How quickly
will I start to feel better?
Your rate of response depends on the severity of your condition and
the length of time you have had the condition, but many people start
to feel the positive effects of acupuncture within the first few visits.
How much is
this kind of care going to cost?
Our primary concern is your health so we will make the finances work
for you. Total costs vary depending on the extent of your healthcare
needs. Please ask us about your options.
Do you
take my insurance?
We bill most insurance companies. If you have acupuncture benefits included
in your individual policy, we can verify eligibility and let you know
how much of your care may be covered. Call us at 619-287-4005 or come
in with your insurance card information and we'll be happy to check
on your coverage and eligibility.
How do
I determine if acupuncture can help my problem?
Acupuncture helps to improve function, so anything that your body has
the capacity to do acupuncture can help. Click
here for some common examples of what acupuncture treats.
What are
the risks involved with acupuncture treatment?
There are virtually no risks involved with acupuncture treatment when
performed by a licensed and experienced acupuncturist.
Are there
certain conditions that make acupuncture dangerous?
No. If you have concerns or questions about a condition such as blood
diseases, blood clotting disorders, pregnancy, pharmaceutical drugs
you are currently taking, or any other medical diagnosis, please call
us with your questions.
Can acupuncture
help me in an emergency?
If you have an emergency medical situation, please call 911 or get to
an emergency medical doctor as soon as possible. When you are out of
danger, we'll be more than happy to step in and help to improve your
health through integrative care.
What
is integrative care?
Integrative care is patient-centered medicine that combines the highest
standards of clinical nutrition, Oriental medicine and a team approach
with the most qualified outside specialists. Integrative care requires
a commitment and participation from three sources: our center, other
healthcare specialists and you as a patient need to be actively involved.
Are all Acupuncturists
Doctors of Oriental Medicine (O.M.D.)?
The state of California requires a Master's degree and an aggressive
licensing exam to practice acupuncture as an L.Ac. (Licensed Acupuncturist).
Graduates of the first professional Doctor of Oriental Medicine program
have advanced, post-graduate training in acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
beyond this training to practice acupuncture. MORE: What
is a Certified Nutrition Specialist?
Why do
some people who are not sick get acupuncture?
Healthy people don't get sick and it is the physician's job to help
keep you that way. Prevention and maintenance are at the core of Oriental
medicine.
Do I
get acupuncture on my first visit?
Not usually. We suggest that you come into our wellness center for an
initial consultation visit so that we can get to know you, answer your
questions and let you know more about how acupuncture and Oriental medicine
might be able to address your condition.
ABOUT THE INITIAL CONSULTATION VISIT...
When you come into our wellness center for the first time, we will have
you sit down for about 20 minutes with Dr. Mancini's associate, Uzi
Chen. Uzi is a licensed acpuncturist and he will go over your health
history, symptoms, concerns and goals to determine if Dr. Mancini will
be able to help. He can answer any questions you have about what we
do, how Acupuncture works and how you can get started as a new patient.
He can also address any questions regarding costs, insurance and special
scheduling. To make an appointment, please call 619-287-4005.
